My extra credit random post
My random post today is going to be about the new cameras that you've seen officers wear on their chests. Earlier this month I approached an officer and asked them the purpose of such cameras, and he told me that they wear them for not only their safety (a deterrent measure) but also to help identifying criminals. Earlier today though I stumbled upon this article involving these cameras.

I am disgusted with LAPD after watching this video. I never would have believed that there are actually officers planting drugs on innocent civilians. What I really cant believe is that these officers tried to pull this stunt when each of them have a camera attached to their vests. As I was watching the video my blood began to boil as you see the cop pull a bag of narcotics from one of his pockets and throws it on the floor for another cop to pick it up and put it in this civilians wallet. I believe that every cop that was on that scene should face life in prison as a lesson to every other police officer as to what the consequences will be if you try to plant drugs onto someone who is not guilty of anything.

I've been learning about how the War on Drugs created laws that coincidentally marginalized certain groups of people, but this is just ridiculous. This isn't even bending the law anymore; it's literally an abuse of it. What does having a high incarceration rate necessarily accomplish when it was all intentionally set up?
ReplyDeleteThis news remind me something about the class I'm taking. Based on what I have learned from my American Study class, LAPD is always criticized for the police's excessive power, and it do caused so much negative results historically, such as 92 riots, which also called Rodney King riots. Absolutely, the reason I still remember this is because I have wrote a 7 pages research paper about this :(

This is such a blatant abuse of power, but at least now there is a way to prove that the civilians were innocent. Does anybody know if the cops were actually charged with crimes for this?
ReplyDeleteAriel,
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you decided to tackle a very topical issue that will hold relevance far into the future. I think that all public servants need to be held accountable for actions that they take on behalf of the public. At that point these police officers have forfeited their right to privacy and should be tracked and recorded within reason

Ariel I'm glad your brought up this topic. This is a very controversial topic and feel much of the same way as you. There is a problem on both sides and its important we find an optimal solution.
